History of Tui Na:

Tui Na, also known as Chinese Massage, is believed to be the oldest known system of bodywork, dating back to around 2700 BC. It originated in ancient China during the Shang Dynasty. The most famous ancient text on Chinese medicine, Huang Di Nei Jing, completed between the first century BC and the first century AD, includes records of the use of massage techniques and how they should be used in the treatment of certain diseases.

During the Sui (AD 581-618) and Tang (AD 618-906) dynasties, a department of massage therapy was founded within the Office of Imperial Physicians, and the practice and teaching of Chinese massage therapy continued to blossom. In the Song dynasty (AD 960-1279) and the Yuan dynasty (AD 1280-1368), an intensive analysis of Chinese massage techniques was undertaken and the therapy was further refined.

It was during the Ming dynasty (AD 1368-1644) that it took the name Tui Na. Many texts were written during this period, particularly on pediatric Tui Na, which had become hugely popular. In 1956, the first official training course in Tui Na was opened in Shanghai; other hospitals followed suit, opening their own Tui Na departments.

Healing Your Body With The Art Of Tui Na:

Tui Na massage is an ancient form of massage that focuses on balancing a person’s energy. Practitioners use various techniques, including kneading, pressing, rolling, and stretching. The practice includes a range of massage and manipulation techniques. During the session, a practitioner may use their hands and arms to massage, knead, press, and stretch the body.

The goal of Tui Na massage is to create harmony in the yin and yang of the body by getting rid of blockages and disturbances that manifest as illness, disease, and emotional issues. Similar to acupuncture, Tui Na massage uses the same energetic meridians and acupoints to balance the qi and blood in your body, leading to better health.

Tui Na massage can also involve herbal poultices, compresses, and salves. A practitioner may place these on the outside of the body to enhance the therapeutic effects. Some practitioners may place greater emphasis on specific aspects of the technique.
